The app shows where Proastiakos trains are by combining what riders' phones report. To do that it needs your location while you are on a train. This page says exactly what leaves your phone, why, and how long it is kept.
What the app collects
While the app is open, your device reads your location and decides on the device whether you are on the railway line. If it decides you are, it sends:
- How far along the line you are — a single distance in metres from the start of the route.
- Which direction you are travelling — one of two values.
- The time of the reading.
- A random session id, generated fresh for each journey, used only to tell one rider's readings apart from another's when estimating a train's position.
If you report a delay or an incident by hand, that report is sent too, along with the nearest station and, if you write one, your note. Other riders see only the category, the delay, the station and the direction of travel — your note is read by the developer alone and is never shown to anyone else.
What the app never collects
- Your coordinates. Latitude and longitude are converted to a distance along the railway on your device. They are never transmitted and never stored.
- Anything while you are off the line. If you are not on the railway corridor, nothing at all is sent — including when you are at home, at work, or anywhere else.
- Your identity. There is no account, no name, no email address, no phone number, no advertising identifier. The session id is discarded and replaced at the end of each journey, so journeys cannot be linked to each other or to you.
Why, and on what basis
The only purpose is to show live train positions to people using the app. There is no official live feed for this line, so the riders are the source. The data is not used for advertising, profiling, or analytics, is not sold, and is not shared with anyone.
The lawful basis is your consent: the app shows you what it collects and why before anything starts, and your device's location permission prompt is where you agree. You can withdraw it at any time in your phone's settings, and the app keeps working as a read-only view of the line.
How long it is kept
- Position readings: deleted automatically. They are used only while they are fresh — a reading older than a few minutes is ignored — and are removed shortly afterwards.
- Reported delays and incidents: 90 minutes, then deleted automatically.
- Published train positions hold no session ids and are replaced every minute.
Who processes it
The app uses Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore, Cloud Functions and anonymous Authentication) to receive and store what is described above. Data is held in the European Union. Google acts as a processor; no other third party receives anything.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct, or erase personal data about you, and to object to its processing. In practice there is very little to act on: nothing sent identifies you, and the session id is not linked to your device or to any earlier journey, so we cannot single out your readings even if asked. Withdrawing the location permission stops all collection immediately, and everything already sent deletes itself on the schedule above.
Children
The app is not directed at children and collects nothing that identifies anyone.
